Top dogs rise to occasion at Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Wed, 28 Mar 2018 14:38:58 +0000 Very good little fuzzy buddies who deserve treats are wowing audiences with their agility skills during this year’s SuperDogs performances at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.

Approximately a dozen trainers with 30 dogs in total are performing three times per day at Westoba Place in the Keystone Centre.

Each day’s first two sessions finds the talented performers greet fans for a meet-and-greet in Salon A, where the canines are keen on receiving pets and cuddles.

Two days in to the fair, show producer and host David Acer said Tuesday that they’re experiencing “the same kind of excited, friendly enthusiasm that we’ve seen every year.”

The show is structured more as a theatrical presentation than a traditional agility competition, he said. “We see the dogs as performers. They’re cast members along with our human cast.”

While performers come from as far away as Ontario, Melanie Hart and her golden retriever Whiskey and border collie Brian didn’t have far to travel.

The Brandonites are local SuperDogs show staples, with last year’s event featuring her Dutch shepherd, Vigor.

Mixing things up by featuring different dogs this year, Hart was seen at Tuesday’s meet and greet with Whiskey.

Inundated with little hands petting his soft fur, Whiskey soaked up the attention while Hart spoke glowingly of the nine-year-old pooch.”He just excels at everything,” she said. “He can race, he can Frisbee, he does tricks (and) he loves to dance.”

Hart honed his skills at the local Crocus Obedience and Kennel Club, where Hart also teaches, and she said that Whiskey appears to enjoy every minute of it, which is in keeping with other golden retrievers she has raised and trained.

“They love to play, they have a lot of energy, and they’re very affectionate,” she said of the breed.

Equally friendly despite his ominous name, Darth Vader joined Whiskey at the meet and greet.

Handled by owner Kate Gartley, who came from Toronto to participate in this week’s shows, Darth Vader is an eight-year-old black lab mix.

Unlike the “Star Wars” villain he’s named after, Darth Vader is an affectionate dog, and Gartley said that despite being well versed in the SuperDogs activities, Darth Vader remains “a bit of a clown” and tends to misbehave in silly little ways, such as sneaking off with toys.

Despite kids poking and tugged at him, Darth Vader remained calm during the meet and greet, and even wagged his tail in excitement.

“He’s very tolerant,” Gartley said.

This year’s SuperDogs theme is “Wild Wild Woof,” and the daily schedule is available online at, as well as in the programs handed out at the event itself.

Furry and feathered friends on display at Red Deer Pet Fest Sat, 10 Feb 2018 15:40:52 +0000 For the first outing, organizers of Red Deer Pet Fest were thrilled with the early gate numbers.

Less than two hours into the two-day event, they had already sold more than a quarter of the tickets they were aiming for.

“Red Deer always supports their community,” said Russ King, one of the event organizers.

Shaune Fandrey, an event organizer and a director at the career assistance network, said she wanted to do some fun events instead of work type events.

“We’re all animal lovers, we all have multiple pets,” said Fandrey.

On Saturday and Sunday, 41 vendors packed into the Westerner’s Prairie Pavilion for the inaugural Red Deer Pet Fest. King and Fandrey hope to grow the event next year.

“As a group we thought, if we get a thousand people we’d be thrilled,” said Fandrey, by 12 p.m. they had already had 285 ticket purchases.

“I think we’ll hit our thousand, honestly I would have been happy with 500 people because it was our first event,” said King.

Headlining the event were the the President’s Choice SuperDogs who performed tricks and races for the audience. They had shows every two hours both days starting at 11 a.m.

February was chosen as the month to put on this type of event in part because of the SuperDogs availability, but also to have a fun event in February, when it’s typically cold and people are less likely to want to go outside.

It also included a Super Dogs Talent Show on both Saturday and Sunday. Dogs had to be preregistered for the audition.

“Red Deer needs events like this,” said King. “It’s family friendly and people can come out and spend the day. The kids can have a good time.”

Vendors included pet clothing, feline vacation resort, boarding, training, veterinary clinics, Alberta Animal Services, a bird aviary, pet decor and even guard dog training.

The vendors were predominately small businesses. King said some may see more people over the weekend than they see in a week at their business.

The event continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Lisa Sun and Richmond ‘rescue dog turned SuperDog’ shine at PNE Tue, 05 Sep 2017 13:40:21 +0000 Some people attend the Fair at the PNE just to see The President’s Choice SuperDogs.

“I’m one of those people!” said SuperDog handler Lisa Sun, before correcting herself. “I was one of those people!”

Sun, a Burnaby native, grew up watching the famous dog show at the PNE and wishing she could be part of it. Then, in 2009, she got her wish.

At the time, Sun had three pugs, two of which had just won championships, impressing the SuperDogs brass.
