Herb Williams - A Living Legend
Dogs, kids, laughter, music, excitement, and glitzy tuxedos; these are things that Herb Williams, creator of the President’s Choice SuperDogs, enjoys most in life. In May the Chow Chow Club of Canada honored this wonderful gentleman with a Lifetime Appreciation Award. Something he so justly deserves. He brings unbelievable amounts of joy to families across North America with his canine troupe and has made Canada and dogs synonymous.
Breeding and showing Chow Chows was a passion for Herb and his lovely wife, Joan. Starting in 1963, Herb showed his multiple Best in Show dogs to an endless list of wins including the Chow Chow Specialties and won Best of Breed in 1974 with “Shang”, his favorite dog, at the Westminster Show in New York; a prestigious win for a young dog placing over seasoned champions. You can still see Shang and Poppy, a Shang puppy, on some Presidents’ Choice products today. Herb may host a show with a lot of different breeds today but you will always see he has a soft spot for his favorite breed, the Chow Chow. In fact, he can talk “Chows” for hours on end with a gleam in his eye, as this breed will always be close to his heart. When I contacted the Chow Chow Club of Canada about Mr. Williams, I got pages
of wonderful stories and memories, as he was not only a showman and a judge, but a true gentleman inside the ring and out. He is well loved and certainly has a lot of fans.
Not satisfied with the dog show scene back in the 70’s, Herb felt there was something more dogs could do to bring a smile to faces young and old alike, letting dogs be dogs, running and jumping and just plain having fun. Thus, this creative man started President’s Choice SuperDogs 33 years ago in Vancouver at the Pacific National Exhibition. It was the start of something much bigger than he ever expected. He always says he has never trained a dog but enjoys the trained dogs of “his” SuperDogs. He has known thousands of canines, purebred and mixed breed alike, which he has introduced to millions of people. In fact, the last dog to
share the Williams household was a rescue from Edmonton SPCA, a shaggy mix of a dog by the name of Dr. Seuss. No, not a Chow Chow but a dog who desperately needed a home and Herb and Joan kindly took him in. Every dog deserves a home and someone to love him, Herb will say.
As Herb told one exhibitor many years ago, “don’t fault the dog but speak of its attributes”. Herb lives by that standard still today. He enjoys each of the team dogs as if he owns each one of them and the dogs seem to know it is he that has given them their exciting lives in the spotlight. His concern for their care and well being is important to him as he knows who the actual stars of the Superdog shows are. Herb is just there to show the world how to have fun with dogs.
Herb’s work is endless. Whether raising money for a local shelter to help pay for a guide or service dog, bringing smiles to kids in a hospital or at a seniors residence, teaching kids at a day camp different dog breeds, or how to properly approach a dog to a classroom at a local school, this man is genuine and each event is as important as the British Royalty he has entertained.
“To rest is to rust” is a motto that Herb lives by. 80 years young, is his work done? Never! As the creative director for the President’s Choice SuperDogs, Herb still emcees some of the shows but now more than ever, you will find him, paper in hand, drawing a new course for the dogs, listening for new music or creating new equipment, always to entertain the audience in yet some new way. Many times you will find him on his roller blades keeping the backstage running smoothly. All the cast admire his youthfulness and love of life. He can so easily make a person smile, giggle and forget all their troubles with the help of “his” SuperDogs.
The Chow Chow Club of Canada will be thanking Herb for all his dedication not only to the Chow Chow breed but the world of dogs at the upcoming Chow Chow Specialty in Toronto. Many of us remember the semi truck with the huge picture of a Chow Chow on it, rolling down the highway. How many breeds get that honor? Herb deserves the recognition, as he is the example of a man with a passion; a passion for dogs. He has inspired many people to get a dog and enrich their lives. Those who know him have been blessed and those who have yet to meet him will never forget him. The man in the shiny tuxedo with roller blades on...
